When the Erie Canal Was First Opened...

 
Looking back at the history of the Erie Canal isn't a new thing.  Even 100 years ago it was used as a nostalgic and even a marketing opportunity! Check out this ad from the The Journal and Republican and Lowville Times., February 09, 1922. The Canal often could be used as an example of enterprise and industry.  In a democratic society, that could be used to leverage emotions toward patriotism as well as invoke trust in an institution - such as a bank!
