Syracuse Weighlock w Derrick Pratt - Third Thursday Lecture Series from ...
The canal was a complicated engineering marvel. One of the
most interesting aspects was the tolling system and use of weighlocks to
determine toll rates. Discover more about the Weighlock building that now
houses the Erie Canal Museum…
The 1850 Syracuse Weighlock Building, a small Greek revival
building located in the heart of Downtown Syracuse, was originally built for a
purpose similar to weigh stations on highways today, collecting tolls on cargo
in order to pay for the construction and maintenance of the canal. After
abolishment of tolls on the canal in 1883, the Weighlock Building became a dry
dock for boat repair and a New York State office building, while other
weighlock buildings were torn down.
Derrick Pratt is the museum educator at the Erie Canal
Museum in Syracuse, New York. He received a BA from SUNY Cortland and an MA
