August 7: Folktales and Family Tales. Quaking Bogs and Mysterious Lights. Author and storyteller, Lâle Davidson comes from a strong line of storytellers, from Kentucky cousins telling family tales around the kitchen table to her mother conjuring Greek gods on camping trips across Europe. A founding member of the collaborative storytelling trio, The Snickering Witches, she toured the Capital region for ten years with Barbara Chepaitis and Cindy Parrish telling folktales about strong women. Tonight’s program combines Irish fairy tales about chasing corpses through quaking bogs with true family tales of mysterious lights on the high plains in South America, taken from her magical realist novel, Blue Woman Burning. She’ll also tell stories from her collection, Strange Appetites, published by Red Penguin Books. With wry humor and vivid imagery, she’ll shine a light on nature’s wisdom for a magical evening you'll long remember. Her latest novel, Against the Grain, about activists racing to save the California redwoods, is available everywhere books are sold.
