Lunchbox Lesson #3 - Fabric of a Village w Nellie Ludemann of Seneca Falls Historical Society
For March, the Lunchbox Lesson recognized International
Women’s Day with a program that looks at women’s roles during the industrial
era in New York. Ludemann will discuss how the Seneca Knitting Mill has always
been a prominent landmark in the Seneca Falls community since its construction
in 1844. Throughout the history of the Mill, it has been a place of employment,
advancement, and change inside the small Canalside village of Seneca Falls.
“The Fabric of a Village: A Case Study of the Seneca Knitting Mill” explores
the history of this important fixture of the community and looks at real
accounts of the culture inside the mill from a female perspective.
Nellie Ludemann is the Executive Director for the Seneca
Falls Historical Society. Ludemann and
has been with the Society for over three years, first as the educator and now
as the director. While in her educator role, she had the opportunity to expand
the historical society’s educational programs for children and create new
opportunities for students inside the museum. Her favorite thing about the
museum is its rich collections that showcase the life of the family that lived
inside the museum but also the history of the surrounding area of Seneca Falls.
Outside of the museum, Nellie enjoys the outdoors, dancing, and hanging out at
home with her cat, Tiberius.
