Discover the history of Palatine
German immigration to colonial New York, their turmoil in settling into a new
world, and how acculturation impacted the crisis’s as the American Revolution
emerged. This presentation dives into the reasons why Palatine Germans migrated
into England and then immigrated to the Americas, and takes a look at the
relationships with neighbors as they fought to establish home and hearth.
Kathryn Weller is the Director of Education and Visitor Services for the New York State Museum in Albany. She holds a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies with a focus on Museum Education from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. With almost 20 years of experience in the museum field, and as an interpretive historian, Kathryn continues to explore the lives of those who lived in what is now Upstate New York, including Palatine German settlers. Through her Master’s Thesis, “From Meetinghouse to Church to Shrine: The Evolution of the Mohawk Valley’s Palatine Churches,” Kathryn explored the built environment of Palatine German refugees and their descendants who settled in the Mohawk Valley during the 18th century. Kathryn has developed programming for a wide range of audiences from pre-k programming for underserved communities, school-based programs, to adult educational experiences and multi-generational opportunities.
