The Spooktacular Eerie Canal - A Recap of Hauntingly Good Posts

Going deep back into the archives for this look at posts here on the blog featuring spooktacular and eerie tales from along the Erie Canal. Maybe you've experienced some supernatural spectral splendors while out along its banks, floating on its waters, or meandering along its communities... and if so, they've left a lasting impression.  

Maybe you've heard about Winnie’s Haunted Doll (1) and the long tradition of keeping clear of creepy dolls along the canalway. Don't take their blank stares for granted, just ask the spirits of the Brown family. And while you're out there summoning to ask, keep a careful ear out for the Plod Plod (2) of mule shoes upon the towpath.  There might just be a bit more to those low breys into the quiet night.

When you wake from that dream (or was it a nightmare?), grab a delicious breakfast near the canal. Maybe you'll smell the morning biscuits of The Cook Mrs. Carlson (3).  The flour for that might have been kept safe by a wiley haunted Canal Cat (4). YOU should keep a watchful eye while enjoying a meal as the morning fog lifts. Maybe you'll just barely catch the sight of one of the silent Ghost Barges (5).  It's said by some that they travel along at the curse of The Witch of the Ditch (6) and are tormented as they ply the waters for generations. Perhaps a better fate than the petrified that experience The Stone Curse (7). 

If you come across the canal late in the season, as the leaves begin to change, maybe you'll hear the whispers of several tiny voices. A chorus of birds hum along with the Drowned Children of the Sixteens (8) as they begin their own journeys. But they, like many others, never take a moment to honor the Eerie Orphan (9), leaving them to face the cold on their own. They'll keep watch however, and as you finish your adventures some memories you won't be able to explain. 

Don't let it haunt you! Just remember that you were warned. Remember too that it was here along the Eerie Canal, you had a spooktacular time.
